The Highland County Retired Teachers Association met at the Hillsboro Ponderosa Banquet Center on Monday, May 6, 2019. Approximately 30 members and guest were present. The program included a presentation by members of the Lynchburg-Clay FFA Milk Quality and Products Career Development Event team. The team, including members Hailee Waits, Elizabeth Zaremba, and Kelsey Arnett, and co-coach Heather Jo Arnett, won the Ohio championship and placed 8thin the national competition. The students discussed the various aspects of the contest, told the group how the event was conducted, and explained some of the nuances and complexities of preparing for this detailed competition. The presentation was well received, and garnered lively questions and hearty congratulations from the membership. Following the student presentation, Highland County Health Commissioner Jarod Warner spoke to the members regarding the topic of Medical Marijuana. Mr. Warner discussed the history of cannabis use and its criminalization in the United States, the differences in the types of recreational and medical marijuana, controversies surrounding the current national and state initiatives to legalize medicinal marijuana, and the challenges and implications that Ohio may connote from legalization implementations in other states. Following the featured speakers, President Robert Hottle conducted the business meeting, taking reports from the secretary and treasurer as well as reports regarding scholarship awards, an update on the Highland House Christmas tree project, and current month Service Project donations to the Hospice of Hope, and an acknowledgement of recent necrology. A letter to the membership from Elaine Riggle, who has moved from the area, was read to the membership and is copied here. The next General Meeting is set for August 5, 2019, 11:00 AM at Hillsboro Ponderosa Banquet Center. Tentatively, the program for August will include a talk by Dave Bushelman, Highland County Emergency Relief Coordinator Regarding the Opioid Epidemic. Our August Service Project has been identified as a collection on behalf Redi-Fest and similar school supply preparations for the local schools..
